I can’t fix you

Thats right, I can’t fix you. Now, being a healthcare provider this seems counter-intuitive, if not counter productive. The whole goal of health care is to solve a problem, isn’t it? If we look at how western society, and really humanity in general, tends to look at health that goal makes sense. When we turn on the TV we are bombarded by commercials for the latest and greatest prescription medications. Have a runny nose? Take this drug. Have a fever? Take this drug. Have a pain? Take this drug. Feel less than perfect? Take this drug. Even in the alternative community, we are taught that when we feel bad, we must be sick. Therefore, when we feel ok, we must be healthy. Its not something we question most of the time, and at the end of the day the thing most valuable to us we think least about. Until we lose it; that is our health.Think about the last time you were truly sick. Something was wrong, and nothing else in life mattered except getting through the valley of illness you were in. Think about the last time you were truly sick. Something was wrong, and nothing else in life mattered except getting through the valley of illness you were in. We’ve all been there. So we realize now that our health, and more importantly our good health, is our most valuable asset. So why don’t we think about it or even take care of it? Because by and large we fall into the feeling equals healing trap I mentioned earlier; if I feel bad I must be sick and if I feel good I must be healthy. But the truth of the matter is, how we feel has little to do with how we are functioning! Think of food poisoning: it is a very unpleasant experience and something we wouldn’t want to go through on a regular basis. And yet, if there is poison in the body, what is the best thing the body can do? Get rid of it! So while it feels terrible in the moment it is actually, get this, a perfect expression of health given the circumstances. On the flip side, more than half of all Americans with heart disease don’t know until they have a heart attack. They felt fine one day and then we consider them very sick the next; but weren’t they really sick for days, months or even years beforehand? It seems judging our health solely on how we feel is a poor indicator for guarding our most valuable asset.

The secret to good health is that word that keeps coming up: function. Every major player in healthcare defines health as 100% function. So how do we ensure we are working the way we were designed? Good building blocks (what we put in our body). Good movement and habits (what we do with our body). And most important, good communication (ensuring the brain can control the body and coordinate perfect function). Thats where chiropractic comes in; making sure your head is on straight, you spine is aligned and your nervous system is operating at 100%. When your brain and body are connected, you’re given the the best chance to function at 100%.

So instead of reacting to health crises, instead of waiting until its too late, instead of trying to salvage what we have left, doesn’t it make sense to invest in your health? If you are given a sum of money and told it has to last you the rest of your life, would you go out and spend it all at once or invest for the future? We are given the same charge with our health. We are only given one shot at life, so we have to invest in and promote our own good health to reap its benefits for years to come.

You see now, I can’t fix you. I don’t have the magic adjustment that makes x, y or z go away. But what I can do is turn the power within back on, allowing you to heal from the inside out. Only you, the power within you, can fix you, and by getting checked and adjusted on a regular basis you have the best opportunity to reach your full potential!
